Random (but cute) cyclist on Foothill while I was biking into work actually slowed down to ask if I raced, and said I "ride strong for a commuter." It's amazing how much difference a day of rest makes. Current Mood: pleased |

Tomorrow's dilemma: Debating between staying sane by not rowing before a lunchtime killer-climb bike ride and trying to keep up with a 56 year old who has rowed 54132 meters more than me so far this season. Current Mood: indecisive |

Got up at 3:30 today so I could row 42k before work and still make it in early. The rest of the day's activities: 14 mile bike ride to work 27 mile ride at lunch (with 2600 ft climb) 14 mile ride back home Am pooped. Oh, full disclosure: I totally lazed out yesterday (didn't workout at all) and ate like a horse. Then cheated this morning with half a can of Coke. Current Mood: accomplished |

Saturday's Summer Solstice row
"Subject: C2 2008 Summer Solstice Row fnishers Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2008 01:51:20 GMT Congratulations to everyone who participated. Special salute to Joi Bear who lead ALL rowers in the Solstice with 63,300 meters. That equates to 1 full & 1 half marathon plus a few meters extra. Magnificent job. For the year to date Joi is ranked #21 among all C2 ergers with 1,107,195 meters. Plus she is #2 overall in the Female category. On AWL, Joi, is behind only Greg Trahar, Richard White, John Probasco & Jose Maria Ribot and just in front of Paul Hanerfield. This lady is on a mission." I am officially crazy. |

More fuel for my insanity
Got a message from another fellow rower through the Concept2 website where I log my meters: "I was using you as a measure of how well I was doing until today. I put up 18,000 meters and was feeling pretty good about myself until I checked the board. Good grief! Yesterday I was just ahead of you but .... you are out of my league. Congratulations on your prowess, I am truly impressed. Between you and the 73 year old woman in Wake Forest, I am humbled. Casey" If people keep mailing me, I will truly need professional help. |

They gave us each a 4-CPU 64-bit 2.66 GHz desktop with 4 GB of memory, a DVD-RW drive, and two disks (148 and 465 GB) just so we could log in to their intranet. Current Mood: speechless |

Talk about motivating influences..
I received this email today through the Concept2 website from a 69 year old fellow rower. "Congratulations! Outstanding performance in the Global Marathon Contest. Three full marathons and at least one of them under 3 hours. During the 2007-08 season, now ending, I looked to you as a motivating influence. Each day I would review your cumulative meters and then I tried to keep pace with you. For the 2008-09 season I am setting two goals for myself. (1) rowing 5 million meters for the year, (2) rowing a full marathon, (hopefully under five hours). Again, thanks for being a great motivator this past season, maybe you'll be my motivator again this year. We can do 5 million meters!!!" This can only fuel my craziness. |

As if I needed more proof.
I was chatting yesterday with a friend who's been trying to get me to join his rowing club in SF. They rowed to and from Petaluma over the weekend. (02:05:38 PM) Buddy: on my row back, I was with a guy who is the strongest rower in our club. he's in his 50s and he can pull 1:5x over 30-40 minutes. (02:05:47 PM) Buddy: I told him about you. I was like "she rows 50k at a sitting on weekends." (02:05:50 PM) Buddy: he's Irish. (02:05:51 PM) Buddy: and he goes (02:05:59 PM) Buddy: "FIFTY FUCKING K!?" (02:06:03 PM) Buddy: so yeah you're insane. |

Today I timed a 7777 meter row for the Concept 2 Cross-Team Challenge and averaged 2:03.6 minutes/500m in 32:02.0 minutes, my best recorded split ever. There's one lady on the site who did it in 30:25.5, her split averaging 1:57.4. Dammit, I need to beat her! Current Mood: determined |
